5. Within a five-finger position, various intervals can be used. They are named for their total compass. All shown in item 5 are melodic intervals - pitches played one after the other as in a melody.

6. As you can see, 3rds and 5ths appear on two lines or two spaces; 2nds and 4ths appear on a space and a line (line and a space). Intervals also may appear in blocked fashion, the tones sounding simultaneously.
